There was once a group of women studying the book of Malachi in the Old Testament. As they were studying chapter three, they came across verse three, which says: “He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver.” This verse puzzled the women, and they wondered what this statement meant about the character and nature of God. One of the women offered to find out about the process of refining silver and get back to the group at their next Bible study.
That week this woman called up a silversmith and made an appointment to watch him at work. She didn’t mention anything about the reason for her interest beyond her curiosity about the process of refining silver. As she watched the silversmith, he held a piece of silver over the fire and let it heat up. He explained that in refining silver, one needed to hold the silver in the middle of the fire where the flames were hottest as to burn away all the impurities.
The woman thought about God holding us in such a hot spot – then she thought again about the verse, that he sits as a refiner and purifier of silver. She asked the silversmith if it was true that he had to sit there in front of the fire the whole time the silver was being refined.
The man answered “Yes” and explained that he not only had to sit there holding the silver, but he had to keep his eyes on the silver the entire time it was in the fire. If the silver was left even a moment too long in the flames, it would be damaged.
The woman was silent for a moment. Then she asked the silversmith, “How do you know when the silver is fully refined?”
He smiled at her and answered, “Oh, that’s easy. When I see my image in it.”
If today you are feeling the heat of this world’s fire, just remember that God the Father and His Son Jesus Christ are refining you. “For those whom God foreknew He also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son” (Rm 8:29).

Trước đây có một nhóm phụ nữ học sách Malakhi trong Cựu Ước. Khi họ đang nghiên cứu chương ba, họ bắt gặp câu ba, trong đó nói: “Ngài sẽ ngồi để luyện kim tẩy bạc”. Câu này khiến các phụ nữ bối rối, và họ tự hỏi câu này nói gì về bản chất và tính cách của Thiên Chúa. Khi quan sát, bà thấy người thợ bạc giữ một miếng bạc trên ngọn lửa và để nó nóng lên. Ông giải thích rằng để luyện bạc, cần giữ miếng bạc ở giữa ngọn lửa, nơi ngọn lửa nóng nhất, để đốt cháy tất cả các tạp chất.
Người phụ nữ nghĩ về việc Thiên Chúa cũng giữ chúng ta ở một nơi nóng như vậy – rồi bà lại nghĩ về câu Kinh Thánh rằng Ngài sẽ ngồi để luyện kim tẩy bạc. Bà hỏi người thợ bạc liệu có đúng là ông phải ngồi trước ngọn lửa trong suốt thời gian luyện bạc hay không.
Người thợ trả lời: “Đúng vậy,” và giải thích rằng ông không chỉ phải ngồi đó giữ miếng bạc mà còn phải luôn dõi mắt nhìn nó trong suốt thời gian nó ở trong lửa. Nếu miếng bạc bị để quá lâu trong ngọn lửa, dù chỉ một chút, nó sẽ bị hư hại.
Người phụ nữ im lặng một lúc. Sau đó, bà hỏi người thợ bạc, “Làm sao ông biết khi nào bạc đã được tinh luyện hoàn toàn?”
Ông mỉm cười và trả lời: “Ồ, dễ thôi. Khi tôi thấy hình ảnh của mình phản chiếu trên nó.”
Nếu hôm nay bạn cảm thấy mình đang trong lửa thử thách của cuộc đời, hãy nhớ rằng Chúa Cha và Con của Ngài, Đức Giêsu Kitô, đang tinh luyện bạn. “Vì những ai Người đã biết từ trước, thì Người đã tiền định cho họ nên đồng hình đồng dạng với Con của Người” (Rm 8:29).
