Patron saint of Animals, Merchants, and Ecology
Founder of the Franciscan Order
Saint Francis of Assisi’s life is a tale of dramatic transformation. Born around 1181 in a wealthy family, Francis lived a carefree, indulgent youth, dreaming of knighthood and glory. But his world changed after being captured in a brutal war and enduring a year in prison. During this time, he experienced divine visions that set him on a new path.
After his release, Francis renounced his luxurious life, embraced poverty, and devoted himself to rebuilding the Church. His powerful sermons, humility, and care for lepers inspired many, leading to the formation of the Franciscan order. Known for his profound love of nature and even preaching to animals, he became a symbol of compassion and simplicity.
Later in life, Francis reportedly received the stigmata, wounds mirroring Christ’s crucifixion, deepening his spiritual significance. He passed away in 1226, at age 44, leaving a legacy of faith, humility, and environmental stewardship. Canonized just two years after his death, Saint Francis is celebrated worldwide as the patron saint of animals and ecology, continuing to inspire countless followers.
